Gorilla Permit Booking Process
Trekking to see mountain gorillas is a rare and highly regulated experience. To ensure the safety of the gorillas and the quality of your visit, each traveler is required to obtain a gorilla tracking permit. These permits are issued by the national authorities in each country and are strictly limited in number. Tour Uganda Gorillas, in partnership with Alpha Adventure Safaris, is here to make the process seamless, secure, and stress-free.
Uganda Gorilla Permit Process
Authority
Gorilla permits in Uganda are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Permits grant you access to either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Cost
Foreign non-residents: $700 USD per person
Foreign residents: $600 USD
East African citizens: UGX 250,000
Availability
Uganda has over 20 habituated gorilla families, making it the most accessible destination for securing a permit—especially in peak season. Permits are limited to 8 people per gorilla group per day.
How to Book
You can secure a permit:
Directly from UWA (for those based in Uganda)
Through an accredited tour operator like Alpha Adventure Safaris, our trusted booking partner
When you book through Tour Uganda Gorillas, we handle the paperwork, secure your desired dates, and coordinate your trek logistics.
Permit Lead Time
Permits can sell out 6 to 12 months in advance, especially for high-demand seasons (June–September, December–February). Early booking is essential.
Permit Validity
Each permit is valid for one day only and includes:
Park entry
Ranger guide services
One hour with a gorilla family
Rwanda Gorilla Permit Process
Authority
Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) for Volcanoes National Park, home to around 10 habituated gorilla families.
Cost
All non-residents: $1,500 USD per person
Rwandan citizens: RWF 30,000
East African citizens: $500 USD
Rwanda’s permits are the most expensive but also highly sought after due to the park’s easy access from Kigali and well-developed tourism infrastructure.

Use a licensed tour company such as Alpha Adventure Safaris (through Tour Uganda Gorillas)
Our partnership ensures priority access and support throughout your trip.
Permit Inclusions

Congo Gorilla Permit Process
Authority
Gorilla permits in the Democratic Republic of Congo are issued by Virunga National Park, the only park currently offering access to mountain gorillas in the DRC.
Cost
Around $400 USD per person, though pricing may vary due to park policies, promotional offers, or temporary closures
Permit Booking
Unlike Uganda or Rwanda, all treks in Congo must be arranged through Virunga National Park’s official platform or its approved travel partners. Tour Uganda Gorillas, via Alpha Adventure Safaris, can help connect you with verified operators and ensure the necessary documentation, safety clearances, and visa arrangements are made.
Security Note
Virunga is one of Africa’s most biodiverse parks but also experiences occasional political instability. Permit availability is closely tied to regional security. Our team will advise you on up-to-date travel conditions and help you assess the safest trekking options.
